The future is bright as we celebrate 140 years of the Lexington Opera House with Symphony of Sound on Friday, May 15 @ 7:30pm.
The Lexington Philharmonic and The Lexington Singers join forces under the direction of LexPhil Music Director, Mélisse Brunet and Dr. Jefferson Johnson, Conductor and Artistic Director for Lexington Singers. The program opens with Illuminare by Elaine Hagenberg, a work for chorus and orchestra that contrasts darkness and light - “but as light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace” says Hagenberg.
The program continues with Kentucky-native and virtuosic violinist Tessa Lark, who will perform Michael Torke’s SKY Concerto. Inspired by Lark’s bluegrass roots, the concerto “sounds like it descended from the mountains” (Texas Public Radio), offering a sense of openness and wonder - “like looking up into the expanse of the SKY,” as Torke describes.
The evening concludes with one of the most iconic works in the orchestral repertoire, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, whose unmistakable opening and dramatic arc have captivated audiences for generations.
